The Grand Canal project was conceived with the aim of creating a public space that embodies Hangzhou customs and Chinese landscape cultural elements. Water, a significant element in the local culture, is used as the central theme, merging indoor and outdoor spaces. The design not only reflects the regional characteristics but also optimizes the layout to form a courtyard architecture.
White exterior wall architectural paint, classical pattern boards, metal frames, and floor-to-ceiling windows are the primary elements used in the project. The use of white wall tiles and bluestone alleys further enhances the fusion of traditional cultural elements with modern techniques. Covering an area of 1546 square meters, the project was completed in April 2019, after a four-month construction period.
The project's unique design is a result of meticulous research and understanding of the local culture and landscape. The design philosophy was to interpret the three realms of the canal – standing, observing, and gaining water. The challenge was to embody the relationship between people and nature, people and people, and individuals with themselves. The design successfully incorporates elements of ancient landscape paintings, introducing scenes into the room and creating a harmonious environment.
The Grand Canal project is a perfect example of how design can influence local cities and residents. It allows people to experience the charm of Hangzhou and its unique cultural connotation and canal culture elements. The project is a celebration of the harmony between man and nature, achieved through the thoughtful use of design elements and space.
With its innovative approach and unique design, the Grand Canal project has received recognition in the form of the prestigious Silver A' Design Award in 2020. This award is a testament to the project's outstanding expertise, innovation, and remarkable level of excellence. The Grand Canal project is a shining example of NNS Design's commitment to creating spaces that reflect local culture while embracing modern design techniques.
